WHY DO WE HAVE THIS COMPETITION?
The competition is an annual ‘Take A Kid Hunting & Trout Fishing Competition’ for kids aged from 2 - 15 to get out of the house and away from today’s technology and enjoy the outdoors during the school holidays between the third and fourth terms.  This competition requires the participation of parents or caregivers, maybe an older sibling, uncle, aunty or grandparent.  Not only does hunting and fishing provide food for the family but it also requires skill and patience.  We need to teach our kids to hunt and fish safely and efficiently.  It is hoped that with adults taking the children out that they pass on survival skills, bush-craft, and firearm safety.  The rules clearly state that kids must be accompanied by an adult, and the adult must ensure they have the necessary licences.  This competition is always held during the school holidays between the third and fourth school terms.

WHY DID WE START THIS COMPETITION?

The idea for a kids only hunt came from Aaron McCann entering his son in the 2008 Ohakune Easter Hunt.  Aaron had entered the Easter Hunt for several years and decided to enter his son, 6 at the time, as well.  He was surprised when his daughter, 3 at the time, wanted to go hunting too and thoroughly enjoyed herself.  His wife took a photo of them walking in to the weigh in carrying their animals, when Aaron saw the photo he thought to himself ‘this is what it’s all about, the kids getting out there!’  Aaron told his wife that he really wanted to put on a hunting competition for kids and asked what she thought.  She said that they could try but they would need help.  Aaron asked fellow hunter and friend Robert Hawira to help as he had experience with competitions through his involvement with the Waimarino Pig Hunting Club.  Robert has been pig hunting for over 50 years, he took his kids out and is now taking the grandkids out with him.  Robert said he was happy to help guide Aaron in the right direction and help with rules and manpower at the weigh in.  Two other friends, also keen hunters, James Albert and Wayne Mochan, offered to help as well, so with wife Rochelle a committee of 5 was formed.  The committee decided it needed to be held during the school holidays and the best option was between the third and fourth terms.  The event was so successful with 249 entries that a lot of the sponsors said it had to happen again and they would continue to support it, so the committee decided it would become an annual event.
